It seems like I’m at McGuckin Hardware about every day, but it’s probably more like 3 times per week. McGuckin Hardware has just about everything you could think of. Plus, I know Louise, who brilliantly handles their marketing. And Dee, the second generation of this three-generation pillar of Boulder’s community. She shops with us, bless her. Here’s the best part. When I shop at McGuckin’s the taxes I pay stay in Boulder, the salaries I contribute to support people living in or near Boulder and the profits stay in town as well.
I like to support local businesses over national chains. If you’re trying to shop consciously, even big box stores are better than shopping online, though. Consider a national chain – they may not be based in Boulder, so profits leave the community. But they still pay state and local taxes, they still employ some local people in the store. If you’re shopping online, your dollar completely bypasses local support altogether – no profit, no taxes, no employment in your local community.
I know, I know. Online shopping can be convenient, IF you get the right thing the first time, if the product is what you expected and if your shipment doesn’t experience a delay. Comparison shopping online is easier and the selection represents … the universe of possibilities. If you buy something regularly online, an exotic brand of coconut oil, or if you see something that you’d like to try, consider asking a local retailer if they can get it in for you.
Shopping Local at JJWells
At JJWells, we’re placing orders every day. If you see something that you’d like to order online, consider giving us a chance to order it in for you. If you’ve seen a designer that you love, we’d like to see if it fits in at JJWells. We’re here to serve you, and it’s what we love to do – in person, connecting locally, with a smile. If you’re reading this, you are one of the people who makes our day – let us make yours as well!
